Claims Could Follow Suspension of Epilepsy Doctor

02 February 2012

The parents of children who may not have received correct epilepsy care and treatment at a hospital in Surrey are being urged to seek immediate legal advice.

A specialist epilepsy doctor at the Royal Surrey County Hospital has been suspended as part of an ongoing inquiry into the treatment of more than 500 patients over the past nine years.

Angelina Rigby, a Partner at leading law firm Geldards LLP, believes that many of those affected may have a compensation claim for clinical negligence.

“It is possible that the children involved in the doctor’s treatment may not have received the correct standard of care and may have suffered harm as a consequence,” said Angelina, who leads the Clinical Negligence Team at Geldards.

“In such cases, they may have a claim, but it is vital they speak to a qualified legal specialist to help them understand their position.”

Angelina went on to stress that no personal blame has currently been directed at the doctor involved, but anyone who has received a letter from the Royal Surrey County Hospital Trust should contact the Clinical Negligence Team at Geldards for a free initial consultation.

Whilst the team can discuss the legal aspects of the issue, proper medical advice should be sought before any changes are made to a child’s epileptic medication. Anyone with any concerns on this should contact their GP or the hospital trust’s helpline.
