It now appears to be official; Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are getting divorced.
Kim and Kanye are perhaps one of the biggest celebrity power couples of recent times. It’s not just divorce lawyers who are going to be interested in seeing how their divorce unfolds. The whole world is going to be watching to see whether the couple can have an amicable divorce.
Some effective strategies for all couples going through divorce are:
- Consider mediation or collaborative approach – many couples reach an agreement on children and financial matters in mediation or through the collaborative process. It is quicker, cheaper and can be a lot less stressful than Court proceedings.
It’s possible that Kim and Kanye have already agreed the details of their divorce settlement. There have been rumours for several months that the couple were divorcing, and they may have therefore already reached an agreement in respect of arrangements for their children and how their finances are to be divided. With Kim rumoured to have instructed Laura Wasser, a celebrity divorce lawyer, who is known to advocate for her clients to reach a settlement before divorce papers are filed at Court, it’s very possible that an agreement has already been reached.
- Not sharing details of your divorce on social media – yes it may be tempting, but it serves no purpose and often just inflames tensions. Avoid oversharing on social media. If there are children involved, then it’s even more important that they are protected and that they don’t witness their parent’s divorce play out online for all to see.
Kim and Kanye are both social media stars. Kim is a reality star and made a name for herself by sharing every detail of hers and her family’s lives. Whilst it would be a shock for neither of them to address their fans on social media and make a statement regarding their divorce, hopefully none of the details of their divorce will be shared to their millions of followers.
- Think about children – if possible, couples should try to reach an agreement in respect of children arrangements between themselves. If no agreement can be reached direct, then mediation or negotiations between solicitors may assist. Failing that, then a Court may need to decide.
Kim and Kanye have 4 children, the oldest being 7 years old and the youngest only 1 years old. If Kim and Kanye cannot reach an agreement, then a Court will have to decide on the arrangements for the children and will do so by looking at what is in the best interests of the children.
One thing that is certain, when the Kardashians are involved there’s likely to be drama. It remains to be seen at this moment what will happen with their divorce.
