A Golf Instructor Saved My Life Tonight!

I have been playing golf since I was about 12 and have made steady progress over the intervening years – albeit in a downward direction.

Once or twice in desperation I have turned to an instructor on the assumption that if I give them a small sum of money and an hour of my time, they will be able to achieve the miracle of making me a single figure handicap golfer. It is a bit like gym membership; I had been disappointed to find that you don’t actually just have to pay money over, you actually have to turn up and practice!

Motto for 2016: in golf and elsewhere “Stop thinking – just do it”.

The last golf instructor that I used (once) has emailed out to his contacts his latest philosophy. He has come to the conclusion that it doesn’t matter how you swing or how you stand, if you are tall, short, under/overweight, athletic or a couch potato. He seems to have had a “road to Damascus” moment and been persuaded that it is all between the ears.

I knew that. Everything is! I know that instinctively I do better when I don’t worry about how I am doing. I know that if I am enjoying myself performance improves exponentially. This doesn’t just apply to golf it applies in everything I do.

Life is about outcomes – those that we want and those that we don’t want. I am trying to tell myself that standing frozen over the ball, or with pen in hand or with fingers hovering over the keyboard I am very unlikely to get the outcome that I want. A fearful, hesitant approach will never be a successful one. There’s talent in there somewhere and it will out if I let it, I must not over think or over worry it.

Motto for 2016: in golf and elsewhere “Stop thinking – just do it”.

Chairman's Blog - How can the next generation aspire if we don’t inspire?

Locally, 57% of children don’t have a GCSE Maths and/or English grade A-C before arriving at college aged 16. With the experience and knowledge in our education system, the technology at our disposal and the business environment we have in the UK, I find this both staggering and disappointing.
