Colleagues from Geldards’ Derby office volunteered and took part in the YMCA Derbyshire Sleep Easy 2020, sleeping outside in the Derbyshire Cricket Ground car park to raise money for the charity, which supports over 300 individuals in need of accommodation and a safe front door.
YMCA Derbyshire is an independent charity committed to helping young people, particularly at times of need. They provide accommodation, innovative training and education programmes, various schemes for children and their families in and out of school and other projects aimed at achieving sustainable community development. Their vision is to enable young people and communities to thrive and our mission is to develop the whole person body, mind and spirit.
The team from Geldards included Partner Paul Hilsdon, Associate Clare Hardy, and Solicitor Ellis Pugh, who joined in the sleep out for the third time.
The sleepers build a shelter out of cardboard and tarpaulin and attempt to sleep outside. The team built a pretty spacious cardboard box and decorated it with English and Scottish flags as well as Derbyshire flag and got through the night by playing cards and otherwise trying to sleep. The weather was cold but luckily for the sleepers, stayed dry.

Commenting on the event, Ellis,said:
“The YMCA Sleep Easy is something Geldards has taken part in for a number of years now. Whilst the event is good fun because of the social aspect and the challenge of building a shelter that will keep you dry and (relatively) warm, it does give you some sense of how difficult it must be to sleep rough and just how important the work of the charity. I am proud of the team for volunteering in such good spirits to sleep out in the cold to raise money or such a good cause and any donations you can give for the charity will be greatly appreciated by us and the YMCA”
