Volunteers from the Geldards Midlands offices have been visiting The Fernwood School in Nottingham each week for six weeks throughout January and February to participate in the Legal Experts in Schools programme.
Last year, Geldards was the first law firm in Wales to support the national charity Young Citizens with their Legal Experts in Schools programme, and the programme was so successful that our involvement expanded this year to include the Midlands offices, making us the only law firm in the Midlands to participate.
The rewarding initiative is designed to both raise awareness of legal issues and to promote access to a legal career by spending time with a small group of pupils discussing topical legal issues and the impact they can have on their everyday lives. The programme has been, and continues to be, a wonderful opportunity to give back to our local communities.
The sessions were delivered to around 30 pupils in small groups of five or six students led by each volunteer and covered a range of legal subjects relevant to young adults, including family law, children's rights, social media and human rights. The sessions are designed to be informal, interactive discussions which help the young people to learn about the law and the profession while developing lots of key employability skills, such as analytical and critical thinking.
We had a wide range of employees take part, including support staff and paralegals as well as trainee solicitors, associates, partners and the head of the Nottingham office.
Jenny Chatten, Partner and part of the Geldards Corporate Social Responsibility committee who took part in the scheme, commented:
“The Legal Experts in Schools Programme is such a rewarding activity for all of our staff to take part in and a wonderful way for us to give back to the local community, as well as inspiring a future generation of potential lawyers."
"Working with pupils and educating them on laws that impact their lives is important and will hopefully provide a small insight into life as a lawyer to help them see law as a potential future career choice. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting The Fernwood School and working with the pupils and it is something we will look at doing again in the future.”
