What does this mean? It means keeping the focus on non-confrontational approaches to family law with the short- and longer-term benefits that provides for our clients and their families.

No one thinks divorce or dissolution are easy things to start, go through or conclude, whatever the circumstances of the end of that relationship. What can make it much worse though is how it is dealt with.

The Geldards family team’s lawyers are all members of Resolution and all aim to deal with clients and their cases with Resolution’s Code of Practice at the heart of their advice and approach.

We’ve all seen the TV dramas about divorce, we’ve all read the gossip columns about a celebrity divorce or three, but that’s not reality.

The average person going through a divorce or dissolution doesn’t want to spend all their hard earned money on lawyers, they don’t want to be distressed to the max every time an email comes through from their lawyer containing whatever their ex’s lawyer has sent over and most don’t want to have a future where their children feel forced to take a side (whether they are adults or children themselves).

Conflict costs a lot more than cooperation not just financially but emotionally too. This is perhaps felt more profoundly as we approach 11th November, remembering a different type of conflict with enormous costs to all.

So, if you are thinking about a divorce or dissolution and you want a better approach, find a Resolution member, talk to them and know that they should be working to their own Code of Practice in:

• Avoiding inflammatory language
• Encouraging everyone to put the best interests of any children first
• Acting with honesty, integrity and objectivity
• Helping their clients to consider the long term emotional and financial impacts of their decisions
• Promoting communication and cooperation wherever it is possible (between the lawyers, not just the clients)

If your lawyer opens their advice with “let’s win this war”, its probably safe to say, they are not thinking about the aftermath for you.
