What’s my Superpower? My superpower is that I am a woman
Whilst admittedly I don’t know any different, I love being a woman and I am immensely proud to be branded a feminist - but before you roll your eyes and check for burning undergarments- I am a feminist (like I hope all of you reading this) because I truly believe in gender equality. Unfortunately, gender inequality in law is very much present. With the legal sector remaining amongst the most male-dominated industries globally, particularly when looking at the top-ranking, top paid and decision-making positions.
To be blunt, I think in 2021 this is embarrassing and needs to seriously change and at a far more rapid pace than it is at the moment.
Gender inequality doesn’t just affect individuals, it affects economies. Without more women in top ranking positions, I don’t think companies can fully develop, adapt or ever reach their full potential. It is well documented that women and men are from different planets, so why not use this to our advantage? With more women in decision making roles there will be different perspectives, considerations and approaches. There is a wealth of female talent out there, Super Women with voices to be heard and ideas to be actioned.
What saddens me the most about gender inequality in our profession is that there are many women who, like me thought that things could change, but have since become disillusioned with the lack of progression. Hilary Clinton stated that ‘women are the largest untapped resource out there’ and I couldn’t agree more.
I think the legal world needs to tap into this resource and, I am ready to give this dusty old profession a wild shake up. Just imagine, Geldards LLP the trail blazing firm for gender equality.
We all have a part to play, so ladies (and gents) grab your capes ... there is work to be done.
