I’m writing this at Nice airport, wondering what it’ll be like to enter and leave Europe next time.
I am European, I feel European. Grinding my way around the major assembly that is the world at MIPIM, it’s such a reminder that even Europe is not the centre of most people’s universe.
The comparisons can be stark - we fly a thousand miles to get very parochial about our local scene, discussing in depth projects happening and to happen in Derby and Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. These matter mightily to us as indeed they should. We’ve stopped talking about green shoots (how long has that taken us since 2008/9 ?) and we’re now looking at pictures of cranes.
The “B” word has surfaced while we have been here but almost in the abstract as a comedy that’s being played out elsewhere. The level of confidence here has been outstanding. It has been the most constructive MIPIM that I’ve experienced. There’s been very little of the usual bull - just real, focused conversations about things that are actually happening.
I can’t say thanks Cannes, it’s been a pleasure (depending on who’s reading this it IS work) but it IS good for the soul to be surrounded by like-minded people from all over. Thank you Midlands for the collaboration, thank you Marketing Derby and Invest in Nottingham for immaculate organisation and thank you everyone who shows their commitment to investment.
