The Derby office of Geldards has given a week’s worth of work experience to a Derby College business student in a move which further strengthens the firm’s close links with the college.
Nicola Wetton joined the firm’s Pride Park office for five days during the summer holidays after impressing business employers from the college’s Employment and Skills Academy Advisory Board in her mock interview.
“Work experience alerts young people to career opportunities that they might not have previously thought of."
Geldards’ Nino Simone, who sits on the board, said Nicola performed very well in the interview and showed a real desire to learn more about the legal profession.
Nino, who heads up Geldards’ dispute resolution team in the East Midlands, added: “Nicola came across as a bright girl who is progressing well in her studies but she also stood out as someone who has a genuine interest in the law.
“While she was with us Nicola spent a day in our family, corporate, commercial, dispute resolution and employment departments to gain a broader insight into the work of our various teams.
“Her work placement entailed everything from reading up on the law, sitting in on general phone calls and assisting with admin to accompanying lawyers to court.”
Geldards has a long established relationship with Derby College and is keen to build on this through work experience placements like Nicola’s.
Nino said: “Work experience alerts young people to career opportunities that they might not have previously thought of.
“As a member of the college’s Employment Skills & Advisory Board for Business, I’m committed to helping where I can and offering placements to students is a great way for our firm to stay connected with members of the college.
“And, among those students who come into our offices on work experience, I’m certain there may well be someone who will one day join us as a trainee lawyer.”
