Welsh Charities Week 2026 – Day 5: Looking to the Future
On the final day of Welsh Charities Week 2026, we are looking to the future. How can a charity maintain its resilience, so it may continue to make a difference? We believe the key is adaptability and continuous learning.
Good charity governance must incorporate the ability to review and reflect on current practices to determine what is and isn’t working. Charities should also look to receive feedback from its beneficiaries and stakeholders, and stay up to date with industry and sector news. Resilient charities are always looking for opportunities to learn and improve.
A resilient charity is also able to take calculated risks, and be willing to experiment and adapt its practices to keep up with the current climate. Trustees should be encouraged to be forward-thinking and open to new ideas. In order to do this in the best interests of the charity, trustees should also remain vigilant of the environment they are operating in so they are conscious of potential threats and opportunities, and so they may incorporate emerging trends and developments into their planning.
It is important to remember that charities do not need to work in isolation. Collaboration can expand beneficiary reach, share risks, and open new funding streams. Outsourcing work can also help streamline your governance, reducing the workload of your trustees and potentially cutting down on administrative costs. Trustees can look to facilitate meaningful partnerships with other charities to enhance the resilience of the sector. This could include supporting smaller charities that lack the networks or resources to effectively deliver on their purposes. At a time when charities are seeing reduced donations and are struggling to obtain funding, working together may be the most effective way of serving your beneficiaries. Trustees can check out Charity Commission guidance CC34 to learn more.
As we approach the end of Welsh Charities Week it is important to appreciate the amazing work of charities, voluntary organisations, community groups and volunteers across Wales.
There is always more to learn, and trustees should continue to consult Charity Commission guidance and training, and support each other throughout their trusteeship. As a reminder, you can visit the Welsh Charities Week website to learn more and access support.
If you would like to learn more about how to maintain your charity’s resilience, remember to sign up for the All Wales Charity Governance, Law & Finance Conference, taking place on Thursday, 5 March 2026 at Cardiff City Stadium. The conference is designed for managers and trustees across the charity and third sectors who want to deepen their understanding of governance, law, and finance – a perfect opportunity to gain and share insights on the Welsh charity sector.
If you have not already, remember to show a charity some support this week using the hashtag #WelshCharitiesWeek.
