Geldards celebrates historic new bridge installation over Nottingham’s River Trent
As a key partner in Nottingham’s flagship construction project to install a new pedestrian and cycling bridge over River Trent, Geldards were delighted to watch the bridge be lifted into place this week along with other project partners.
Geldards played an integral role advising Nottingham City Council on a major £12.6m construction contract with Balfour Beatty for the construction of the bridge. The project was funded by the Transforming Cities Fund to connect both side of the River Trent, improving sustainability links and connectively across the city.
The first new bridge to be built in Nottingham for more than 60 years, the new structure stands at 87 metres high and weighs 175 tonnes. The bridge was lifted into place by a huge crawler crane in an operation requiring weeks of planning and collaboration with the various project partners. The installation marks a significant step in the construction of this important infrastructure project which is due for a Spring 2026 opening.
Geldards were pleased to play a vital role in this project providing comprehensive legal advice to Nottingham City Council, working across multiple stakeholders and parties involved to bring the project to life. The firm navigated complex negotiations with landowners, providing expert guidance on all construction-related legal matters, including negotiating and finalising the construction delivery contract with Balfour Beatty.
Commenting on the project Infrastructure & Construction partner Chris Hawrylak said:

We were delighted to bear witness to this major milestone in the construction of the new bridge over the River Trent which will improve sustainable transport in the city.”
