Geldards recovers damages for patient who lost eyesight

We have recently settled a case for a client whose eyesight was severely damaged a result of medical negligence relating to treatment for glaucoma.

Glaucoma occurs when the optic nerve that connects the eye to the brain becomes damaged. It is usually caused by a build up of fluid in the front of the eye which increases pressure inside the eye. It can lead to vision loss if it is not treated early or correctly.

Christine, 83, was referred for glaucoma treatment in 2015 but years of delays in glaucoma surgery and a series of mistakes in treatment saw her glaucoma get worse and her eyesight severely deteriorate.

She now has no vision or light perception in her left eye and very poor vision in her right eye. She has lost her independence and requires constant care in her day-to-day life.

Our Senior Associate Rachel Kirby supported Christine through her case, securing her £625,000 in damages.

Christine said:

“The last three years have been very trying, but I have been really well supported by Rachel from Geldards. She is caring, respectful and smart and she went above and beyond for me.

“It was so reassuring to have her on my side. I knew that she genuinely cared and wanted the best for me. She is easy to talk to and we formed a great connection. She told me to ring her any time and I really felt that I could.

“I appreciated the respect that she showed me, which can be rare at my age. She understood my desire to be independent and make my own decisions. I never felt pushed and she was professional and kind throughout the process. I really appreciate everything she has done for me.”
