Matthew is a Solicitor in the Public Sector England team in the Midlands and advises a wide range of public sector clients on commercial property/real estate matters, particularly in relation to major projects involving regeneration and development. He is also experienced in advising all tiers of local government as well as private sector clients in connection with commercial property acquisitions, disposals and landlord and tenant matters (leases, lease renewals, assignments, surrenders, variations, licences).

He also assists the team on public sector matters involving commercial contracts, particularly in relation to the reorganisation and outsourcing of services provision. This includes the variation, novation and drafting of contractual agreements and providing advice where necessary in connection with the existing or proposed arrangements. He has also acted for multi-academy trusts on academy transfers and agreeing the funding documentation with the Department for Education.

Matthew is also experienced in advising on “public law” issues (subsidy control, vires and governance) as part of wider transactions and in isolation.

He also delivers lectures and webinars on a range of legal topics as part of Geldards’ contribution to the East Midlands Law-Share and North-West Legal Consortium programmes.

Prior to qualifying as a Solicitor, Matthew trained within the Public Sector Team at Geldards and supported colleagues on a variety of project, property, commercial and public law work. Before joining Geldards, he worked for a number of international law firms specialising in subrogated litigation.
