On the 29th April 2026, The English Devolution and Community Empowerment Act 2026 established a new legislative framework for strategic authorities in England, while also introducing other significant changes affecting public authorities in England.
The Act represents the most significant piece of local government legislation in England since 2016, taking forward the proposals in the English Devolution White Paper, Power and partnership: Foundations for growth, which recognised the role of devolution in taking forward the Government’s mission to “relight the fire of our economy and ignite growth in every region”.
